How our tools work
Built on the 478-Point Facial Landmark Model
Oval Face Shape and its photo-based tools work from a 478-point 3D facial landmark map: hundreds of anchor points placed on the forehead, brow, eyes, nose, lips, cheeks, jaw and chin [8]. The tools measure distances between those points and compare the ratios to classify your face shape, instead of judging by eye.
This quiz is the no-photo route to the same method. It never scans your face, but its four measurements (face length, forehead, cheekbone and jaw width) are the same proportions a landmark map produces. That is why you can compare your quiz result with our Face Shape Detector directly.

How it works
How This Face Shape Quiz Works (and Where It Can Be Wrong)
Here is exactly what the quiz measures, how your answers become a score, and what it cannot know.
12 targeted questions
Four short steps cover face length, cheekbone, forehead and jaw width, jawline, chin, overall outline and cheek fullness. These are the same proportions stylists and eyewear guides use [5][6].
Weighted scoring
Every answer adds points to the shapes it supports. Each shape’s total is divided by the most points it could have earned, giving a match strength from 0 to 100%.
Honest confidence score
Confidence combines your top match strength with the gap to the second-best shape. A small gap gives a “mixed” result instead of a falsely certain label.
Measurements sharpen it
If you enter four measurements, the tool adds a ratio-based score (length ÷ cheekbone, forehead ÷ cheekbone, jaw ÷ cheekbone) to your answers.
Accuracy disclaimer: This tool is educational and self-assessment based. It is not a medical, dermatological or diagnostic instrument. Face shape categories are approximate even among professional stylists, and your answers depend on how well you can judge your own proportions. Treat the result as a well-reasoned starting point.
Face shape quiz with measurements
Face Shape Quiz With Measurements: How to Measure Your Face
A measurement-based face shape test removes most of the guesswork, because you compare numbers instead of impressions. The standard method uses four distances: face length, forehead width, cheekbone width and jaw width [5][6][7]. This quiz accepts all four in step 4 and turns them into three ratios.
How to measure in 5 steps
- Prepare. Pull your hair back and look straight into a mirror at eye level with a relaxed, neutral expression.
- Face length. Measure from the centre of your hairline to the tip of your chin.
- Forehead width. Measure straight across the widest part of your forehead, usually between the peaks of your eyebrows and the hairline.
- Cheekbone width. Measure straight across the widest part of your cheekbones.
- Jaw width. Measure straight across the jaw corners, about an inch below your ears.
Important: some guides tell you to measure from the chin to the jaw corner and double it. That gives a different, much larger number. Enter the straight-across jaw width here, otherwise your ratios will be off.
How the ratios map to face shapes
The quiz divides each width by your cheekbone width, so your own head size cancels out. These are this tool’s working ranges, based on stylist conventions [5][6], not clinical norms.
| Shape | Length ÷ cheekbone | Forehead ÷ cheekbone | Jaw ÷ cheekbone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oval | About 1.3 to 1.6 | Slightly narrower (about 0.8 to 0.95) | Narrower than forehead |
| Round | Close to 1 (up to about 1.3) | Close to cheekbones | Close to cheekbones, soft angle |
| Square | Close to 1 (up to about 1.3) | About equal to jaw | About equal to forehead, sharp angle |
| Rectangle | 1.4 or more | Close to cheekbones | Close to cheekbones |
| Heart | About 1.3 to 1.6 | Close to or wider than cheekbones | Clearly narrower |
| Diamond | About 1.3 to 1.6 | Clearly narrower | Clearly narrower |
| Triangle | Any | Narrowest | Widest, strong jaw |
Round and square share similar ratios. The tool separates them using your jawline and chin answers, which is why the measurements add to the quiz instead of replacing it. For a calculator that only uses numbers, try the Face Shape Calculator.
Face shape quiz male
Face Shape Quiz for Men: What’s Different?
Men and women are sorted into the same seven shape categories, so this quiz works for both. What differs is the proportions and the styling goals. Anthropometric data show that, on average, facial measurements are larger in men, and the distance between the jaw angles shows the biggest difference between the sexes [4]. In practice, many men have a wider, more defined jaw, so square, rectangle and triangle results are common among men who answer “strong” or “square” for jawline.
In step 4, choose Men’s styling to get haircut, beard and glasses suggestions written for men.
| Face shape | Haircut idea | Beard idea | Glasses idea |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oval | Most cuts work; textured crop or side part | Short boxed beard or stubble | Geometric or oversized frames |
| Round | Height on top, short sides, side part | Angular beard, longer on the chin | Rectangular or angular frames |
| Square | Textured crop with soft movement | Rounded beard line | Round or oval frames |
| Rectangle | Fringe or lower-height styles | Fuller sides, shorter chin | Wide, tall frames |
| Heart | Side-swept fringe, a little length at the sides | Fuller beard through the jaw and chin | Rimless or bottom-heavy frames |
| Diamond | Fringe to soften the forehead | Fuller jaw coverage | Oval or rimless frames |
| Triangle | Volume on top, tidy sides | Keep jaw coverage light | Browline or top-heavy frames |
These are conventions, not rules. See the full face shape guides for more detail on each shape.
Face shape quiz AI
Face Shape Quiz AI: Is This Quiz AI-Powered?
No. This quiz is a transparent, rule-based scoring model, not a machine-learning system, and it never sees your face. That keeps your data private and makes the result explainable: the “Why you got this result” panel lists the exact answers that pushed your score.
“AI face shape” tools usually work differently. They detect landmark points on an uploaded photo (our tools use a 478-point 3D landmark map), calculate distances between them, and classify the ratios. That removes self-perception bias, but results still depend on camera angle, lighting and head tilt. If you want that kind of estimate, use our AI Face Shape Detector and compare it with your quiz result. When both agree, you can be more confident.
Tip: Take this quiz first, then check with a photo tool. If they disagree, the shapes are probably adjacent (for example oval and rectangle), and the “second-closest match” in your result tells you which.
Face shape types
The 7 Face Shapes Explained
Face shape is a descriptive category based on the outline made by your forehead, cheekbones, jaw and chin, viewed straight on. It describes proportion, not attractiveness or health. The seven categories below are a simplification widely used in hair, eyewear and makeup advice. Read the complete reference in our types of face shapes guide. To see how the underlying measurements work, read facial thirds and fifths explained.
Oval face shape
Gently curved outline, cheekbones the widest point, length roughly 1.5 times the width. The most balanced and versatile shape.
Round face shape
Width and length are similar, with soft edges, full cheeks and a jaw without strong angles.
Square face shape
Forehead, cheekbones and jaw are similar in width, with a strong, angular jawline and a flat chin.
Rectangle (oblong) face shape
Square-like proportions but noticeably longer, with straighter sides from temple to jaw.
Heart face shape
Wide forehead and cheekbones that taper to a narrow, often pointed chin.
Diamond face shape
Narrow forehead and jaw with cheekbones as the clear widest point.
Triangle (pear) face shape
Narrow forehead that widens to a fuller, more prominent jaw. The inverse of the heart shape.
Tips before you start
- Pull your hair back so your hairline and jaw are visible.
- Look straight into the mirror at eye level rather than tilting your chin.
- Compare your forehead, cheekbones and jaw with each other, not with an ideal.
- Use a relaxed expression. Smiling widens the cheeks.
- Avoid picking “average” for everything. It pushes you toward oval by default.
Limitations of face shape quizzes
Self-reported quizzes depend on how accurately you can judge your own proportions, and hairstyle, facial hair and mirror lighting can all bias that judgment. Quizzes also compress a continuous range of real faces into seven labels, so borderline and mixed results are normal. Your face shape can also shift with weight change, ageing, muscle tone and dental work.

Methodology note
The question weights and ratio thresholds in this tool were set by the Oval Face Shape editorial team from the conventions in references [5] to [7] and the proportion principles in references [1] to [3]. They have not been clinically validated, and no accuracy percentage is claimed. We revise the weights when we find mismatches between results and photo-based checks, and we update the date at the top of this page when we do.
FAQ
Face Shape Quiz: Frequently Asked Questions
What is a face shape quiz?
A face shape quiz is a structured questionnaire that estimates which category your face most resembles (oval, round, square, rectangle, heart, diamond or triangle) by comparing the width of your forehead, cheekbones and jaw with your face length. This quiz also accepts optional ruler measurements.
Is this face shape quiz free?
Yes. The face shape quiz is completely free, with no sign-up, no email and no photo upload. You can retake it as many times as you like.
How accurate is a face shape quiz?
Accuracy depends on how well you judge your own proportions, so no quiz can promise a fixed percentage. This one shows a confidence score and a second-closest match instead of a single certain label, and it lists exactly which answers drove your result. Adding measurements, or checking with a photo-based tool, improves reliability.
Is there a face shape quiz for men?
Yes. Men and women share the same seven face shape categories, so the scoring is identical. In the last step, choose Men’s styling to get haircut, beard and glasses suggestions written for men.
How do I take a face shape quiz with measurements?
Measure four distances in a straight line: face length (hairline centre to chin tip), forehead width, cheekbone width and straight-across jaw width. Then open the optional measurements panel in step 4 of the quiz, enter the numbers in centimetres or inches, and the tool adds a ratio-based score to your answers.
Is this face shape quiz AI?
No. It is a transparent rule-based scoring model that never sees your face, which keeps it private and explainable. Our photo-based tools instead use a 478-point 3D facial landmark map to measure your proportions. If you want that kind of estimate, use the Face Shape Detector and compare the two results.
How does this face shape quiz work?
You answer 12 questions across 4 short steps. Each answer adds weighted points to the shapes it supports. Every shape’s total is divided by the most points it could earn to give a match strength, and the highest becomes your primary result. Confidence combines that match strength with the gap to the second-best shape.
Is my data stored or shared?
No photo or camera is needed and no facial data is collected. Your answers are processed in your browser, and only your last 10 results are saved in your own browser storage so you can compare attempts. Nothing is sent to a server.
Why did I get a Mixed Face Shape result?
Many real faces sit between two categories. If your top two match strengths are within 6 points of each other, the quiz reports a blended result and names both shapes instead of forcing a single label.
What is the difference between oval and oblong face shapes?
Both are longer than they are wide. An oval face has gently curved, balanced proportions with the cheekbones as the widest point, while an oblong (rectangle) face has straighter sides and a more uniform width from forehead to jaw, usually with a longer length-to-width ratio.
