How to find your face shape
- Face the camera or mirrorPull your hair back and look straight ahead in even light.
- Get four measurementsLet the detector map them, or measure with a soft tape.
- Divide length by cheekbone widthThis one ratio separates long faces from wide ones.
- Check the widest point and jawMatch them to the table below to name your shape.
What shape face do I have? Start with your widest point
| Your widest part | Your jaw and length | Likely shape |
|---|---|---|
| Forehead | Narrows to a tapered chin | Heart or inverted triangle |
| Cheekbones | Forehead and jaw both narrow | Diamond |
| Jaw | Angular, with a narrower forehead | Triangle |
| Jaw | Fuller and rounded, forehead narrowest | Pear |
| All three similar | Soft and curved, length 1.15× width or less | Round |
| All three similar | Strong and angular, length 1.15× width or less | Square |
| All three similar | Angular, length 1.5× width or more | Rectangle |
| All three similar | Straight, length 1.5× width or more | Oblong |
| Forehead slightly wider than jaw | Gently rounded, length 1.3–1.5× width | Oval |
These ranges are this tool's classification heuristics, not scientific thresholds. Many faces sit between two shapes.
How the detector works
Four automatic steps, all in your browser.
Provide an image
Upload, drag in or capture a front-facing photo.
Map landmarks
An on-device model returns 478 3D points, including 10 iris points.
Measure ratios
Length-to-width, forehead-to-jaw, forehead-to-cheekbone, chin-to-jaw and jaw angle.
Match a profile
Your ratios are compared with ten profiles and the closest one wins.
Photo tips for a reliable result
Small changes to the photo move the numbers more than anything else.
Face the camera
Head level, looking straight at the lens at eye height. Tilt skews width and length.
Even light
Soft light from the front. Hard side shadows hide the jaw and temple edges.
Hair back
Show the hairline, temples and jaw. Hair across them shifts the landmarks.
Neutral face
Mouth closed, no big smile, no hat or sunglasses. Fill most of the frame.
Check your face shape by hand
No camera needed. Pull your hair back and take four measurements with a soft tape, then enter them in the Measurements tab.
Forehead width
Across the widest part, about a finger above the eyebrows.
Cheekbone width
Between the highest points of the cheekbones.
Jawline width
Corner to corner across the widest part of the jaw.
Face length
Centre of the hairline straight down to the chin tip.
Two signals separate most shapes: the length-to-width ratio, and which width is largest. The manual method skips chin width and jaw angle, so it can differ slightly from the photo method.

Facial proportions and measurement guidelines
Ratios are length ÷ cheekbone (bizygomatic) width. They are classification heuristics used by this tool, not universal scientific thresholds. Pear and inverted triangle are told apart mainly by jaw, cheekbone and forehead proportions.
| Face shape | Length ÷ width | Jawline | Forehead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oval | 1.3–1.5× (up to ~1.5) | Gently rounded | Slightly wider than jaw |
| Round | Roughly equal (≤1.15) | Soft, curved | Rounded, similar width to cheeks |
| Square | Roughly equal (≤1.15) | Strong, angular | Straight, similar width to jaw |
| Rectangle | 1.5×+ (elongated) | Angular, defined, narrower than forehead | Wider than jaw |
| Oblong | 1.5×+ (elongated) | Straight, minimal curve | Close to jaw width |
| Heart | 1.3–1.5× | Narrow, tapered | Widest point |
| Diamond | 1.3–1.5× | Narrow, pointed | Narrow |
| Triangle | 1.3–1.5× | Widest point, angular | Narrow, narrower than jaw |
| Pear | Roughly average | Fuller, widest point | Narrow, narrowest point |
| Inverted triangle | Roughly average to moderately longer | Narrow, sharply tapered | Widest point |
Best styles for every face shape
Pick a shape to see hairstyle, beard and glasses ideas. The aim is always balance: add width to a long face, length to a wide one, and weight where the face is narrow.
Long shapes
Oval, oblong, rectangle. Add width with waves, bangs and side volume; skip extra height.
Wide shapes
Round, square. Add height and vertical lines; layers and off-centre parts slim the face.
Top-heavy shapes
Heart, diamond, inverted triangle. Add fullness at the jaw with chin-length cuts.
Bottom-heavy shapes
Triangle, pear. Add crown volume and forehead width with quiffs and bangs.
Which method should you use?
All three give an estimate. If two methods disagree, read both shape guides.
| Method | Needs | Signals used | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upload photo | A front-facing image | 5: length, forehead, jaw, chin, jaw angle | Fast result with a measurement overlay |
| Live camera | Camera permission | Same 5 as upload | No saved photo on your device first |
| Measurements | Soft tape, 4 numbers | 3: length ÷ width, forehead ÷ jaw, forehead ÷ cheek | No camera, full control over the inputs |
Accuracy and privacy
How accurate is it?
Results come from measured geometry, not random output, so the same photo always gives the same answer. Angle, distance, lighting, hair over the forehead or jaw, expression and image quality can all move the result. It is a styling aid, not a medical or clinical measurement, and many faces sit between two shapes.
Is my photo kept?
No. Photos and camera frames are analysed in your browser. They are not uploaded to our servers, stored, or used for AI training. Your browser does download the model, page code and fonts from jsDelivr and Google; that is the tool coming to your photo, not your photo going out. Downloaded result cards are saved only on your device.

Frequently asked questions
What shape face do I have?
Upload a photo, use your live camera or enter four measurements above. The tool compares your proportions with ten face shape profiles and names the closest match, plus a second shape when two score closely. By hand, find your widest point and divide face length by cheekbone width.
How do I find my face shape?
Pull your hair back, face the camera straight on and run the face shape detector. Or measure face length, forehead, cheekbone and jaw width, divide length by cheekbone width, then compare the widest point and jaw with the reference chart on this page.
How can I tell my face shape without a photo?
Measure four distances with a soft tape and enter them in the Measurements tab. The tool compares length ÷ width, forehead ÷ jaw and forehead ÷ cheekbone ratios with the same ten profiles. It cannot measure chin width or jaw angle, so treat it as an estimate.
What is an AI face shape detector and how does it work?
It finds facial landmarks in an image, measures distances such as face length and forehead, cheekbone and jaw width, and compares those ratios with known face shape categories. This one runs the landmark model in your browser.
How accurate is this face shape detector?
It measures proportions from 478 facial landmarks and compares them with ten profiles, so the same photo gives the same result every time. It is a styling estimate, not a clinical measurement, and the classification has not been independently validated.
Which face shapes can it detect?
Ten: oval, round, square, rectangle, oblong, heart, diamond, triangle, pear and inverted triangle.
Is my uploaded photo stored or shared?
No. Your photo or camera frame is analysed in your browser, never uploaded to OvalFaceShape.com's servers, stored or shared. It is removed when you leave the page, refresh, or choose another image.
What is the best photo to use?
A clear, well-lit, front-facing photo at eye level, with hair pulled back, a neutral expression, and no sunglasses or hat.
Can I have more than one face shape?
Yes. When two profiles score closely, the result names the second as also close. Reading both guides is more useful than forcing one label.
Is this a face shape filter?
No. It is not a camera filter or effect for social apps. It analyses your proportions, draws measurement lines over your photo and gives a result with styling suggestions.
Is face shape analysis the same as a face symmetry test?
No. Face shape compares overall proportions; a symmetry test compares the left and right sides of your face. They measure different things. Try the Face Symmetry Test for that.
What if it cannot find my face?
Use a clear front-facing photo in good light with your face filling most of the frame. If that still fails, use the Measurements tab.
Is the face shape finder free?
Yes, completely free with no sign-up or payment.
